When the Going Gets Tough,
The Tough Go Fishing!
In
an economy where every new day brings news of another major downsizing
or company closing, it's a challenge for workers to remain upbeat, creative,
and motivated. It's times like these that call for a renewed commitment
to creating a workplace that values both creativity and fun, two keys to
recruitment, productivity, and long-term retention. Many companies struggling
with low morale and declining employee confidence are instituting motivational
programs like Fish!, based on the Seattle's World Famous Pike Place
Fish Market, an otherwise ordinary fish market that's extraordinarily successful.
The work is hard and the hours are long-yet these employees make a personal
choice to bring passion, playfulness, commitment and a positive
attitude to work every day.
The FISH! Philosophy is based on the following four principles:
- Play
- Make Their Day (internal and external customers)
- Be There (i.e., live in the present moment)
- Choose Your Attitude
These simple yet powerful principles have already made a difference in
companies such as Sprint, Ford Motor Company, Southwest Airlines, as well
as countless small businesses and non-profit organizations. If you're interested
in learning how the FISH! Philosophy can create a sense of
renewed energy and commitment in your organization, please call either

Bob Carnegie and Stephanie Daniel recently delivered Fish Sticks:
Keeping the Vision Alive at Home and at Work, to a group of 150 American
Heart Association employees at their Annual Retreat in Stamford, Connecticut.
Fish Sticks is a creative play program designed to encourage participants
to apply and sustain the Fish! philosophy in their everyday lives. It's
also an opportunity for employees from different locales and units to forge
new bonds and strengthen ties. Through a variety of individual and group
activities, participants explore their unique creative potential and define
new ways to work together in groups. The result is a of colorful array
of ideas and concepts that participants can use to create a passion-filled
workplace that inspires increased morale, higher productivity, and greater
customer service.
